# Metabolic peptide doctor: questions about weight or blood sugar.

Here, “metabolic care” means care for weight or blood sugar. Start with the medicine’s name, who will check your health, and the full bill.

## What does “peptide” mean?

Peptides are small strings made from protein building blocks. Insulin is one example.

As of September 2026, US rules depend on the specific product, not the word “peptide”.

What to avoid

A little more detail

## Is this real medical care?

In the US, medicines are reviewed for specific uses by the Food and Drug Administration, known as the FDA.

At the September 26, 2026 check, FDA approval covered semaglutide products under the names Ozempic and Wegovy. It also covered tirzepatide products under the names Mounjaro and Zepbound.

At that check, Wegovy had a use for losing weight and keeping it off, with food and activity changes. Zepbound had that use too, with food and activity changes.

Ozempic injections had a use for adults with type 2 diabetes, with food and activity changes.

Compounding is the work of preparing a medicine to meet a patient’s needs, done by a pharmacy or doctor. As of September 26, 2026, those custom-made medicines have no FDA approval or FDA review before sale.

An approved product, a custom-made medicine, and a research product call for different checks.

Take this into the visit

## Start with the need you want help with.

Ask: “What are we trying to treat, and why would this medicine fit?”

As of September 2026, state-board guidance says choosing a medicine from a list is not enough for proper care. The doctor must also check your health before deciding on treatment.

That guidance is from a group of state licensing boards called the Federation of State Medical Boards. The rules that apply to your visit come from your state.
